Why We Ride

VBCF Board members and staff enjoyed another fun and colorful “Cowgirls for a Cure” event on May 18 & 19th at Meadow Event Park in Doswell, VA. This was the 4th annual all-girl rodeo with proceeds benefiting VBCF and the VA Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  To date, Cowgirls has raised over $34,000 for VBCF’s breast cancer education and advocacy programs!

This event was started by the dynamic duo of Brandy Slaughter and Candice Parsley.  Candice is a lymphoma cancer survivor, having been diagnosed while still in college. Brandy and Candice know that cancer impacts the lives of so many in Virginia so they came up with the idea of an all-girl rodeo to raise awareness and funds to benefit groups working to eradicate it.  Candice and Brandy work tirelessly to make the rodeo bigger and better each year. We are amazed by their energy and are so appreciative of their support.

The 2-day event included barrel racing, goat tying and team roping competitions, as well as a survivor recognition ceremony. VBCF Board President Cliff Deal, MD and Board Members Marylinn Minor and Jessica Ramirez were delighted by the beautiful horses all decked out in pink! They also enjoyed talking to attendees who stopped by VBCF’s education table.

New this year was a “Why We Ride” display of tribute ribbons.  Participants used the ribbons to recognize who they were riding for and write messages of love and encouragement.

Congratulations to Candice and Brandy on another wonderful Cowgirls for a Cure!
