Award Criteria
To be considered for the Sharon H. Kohlenberg Healthcare Service Award, an individual or team must meet the following criteria:
- Resident of Virginia; and
- Licensed by the Board of Medicine to practice medicine in Virginia; licensed by a health regulatory board within the Virginia Department of Health Professions (i.e., nurses, therapists,
- counselors, psychologists, social workers); or employed in a healthcare setting (e.g., a healthcare administrator in a hospital or hospice); and
- Works in a breast cancer-related healthcare field and provides healthcare-related services to individuals with breast cancer, family members, caregivers, or others (volunteers are not eligible for nomination); and
- Exhibits a “deep and abiding commitment to the fight against breast cancer” (e.g., an individual or team that contributes time and expertise to breast cancer organizations outside of regular work duties); and
- Typically goes above and beyond what is normally expected of a competent, caring healthcare provider (i.e., many people think highly of their oncologists and nurses and therapists who are all very good at what they do, but this award is for someone who is exemplary and passionate about what they do).
- Current members of the Board of Directors are not eligible to be nominated for this award.
VBCF is particularly interested in receiving nominations of individuals who reflect the spirit of Sherry Kohlenberg who was described as a “vibrant, competent healthcare worker” and a “dynamic breast cancer activist.”
Further, VBCF encourages nominations that are representative of the diversity of our Commonwealth. We are looking for an exceptional individual or team that has a dedication to treating or caring for breast cancer patients or their family members. In addition, we are looking for an individual or team that has a passion about the cause, who contributes time outside of regular professional hours to the fight against breast cancer.
