The Power of Pink in Roanoke: Raising Hope, Unity, and Funds for Virginians Facing Breast Cancer

by Sarah Stephenson, Special Events Manager SWVA

The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF) was thrilled to host this year’s Power of Pink Roanoke Luncheon at the beautiful Hotel Roanoke. The event was not only a wonderful opportunity to come together in support of breast cancer awareness and research but also a powerful moment of unity and hope for the future. We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us, donated, and helped raise $115,000 to support the Southwest Virginia (SWVA) Diagnostic Fund. These funds will provide essential diagnostic services for uninsured and underinsured patients in our community, bridging critical gaps in healthcare access.

We owe a huge thank you to our incredible sponsors, including Blue Ridge Cancer Care, The Greenbrier Resort, Branch, Berglund Cars, Finks, and Carter Machinery, whose generous support made this event possible. Your contributions were instrumental in ensuring a successful luncheon, and we are proud to partner with organizations committed to the cause of breast cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Our luncheon featured inspiring guest speakers who left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance. Kristen Dahlgren, former NBC News correspondent and breast cancer survivor, captivated the audience with her personal story and an update on her work with the Cancer Vaccine Coalition. Kristen shared exciting insights into their mission to develop a breast cancer vaccine, which, if successful, could come to market within the next 5-10 years. Her message of resilience and innovation inspired hope and reminded us of the importance of continued investment in breast cancer research.

We were also honored to have Joey Coakley Beck, a local advocate, share her own journey of early detection. Joey emphasized the lifesaving power of regular screenings and explained how catching her condition early made all the difference in her fight. Her story served as a poignant reminder to all of us about the importance of staying vigilant and proactive with our health.

A heartfelt thank you to all the donors who contributed items and services to our Mobile Auction. Your generosity added excitement to the day and raised additional funds to help us expand access to diagnostic services for those in need.

Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the Power of Pink Roanoke Luncheon this year. Together, we are making a real difference in the lives of patients and families across Southwest Virginia. With your support, we are one step closer to a future free from breast cancer.
